The Month of Elul
Sundown, August 17th until Sundown, September 15th
Elul is the 12th month of the Jewish calendar. It symbolizes the ending of the old year and the expectation of the year to come. It is a time of prayer and introspection, it is the prelude to the High Holy Days: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. Every day we blow the shofar and special readings of the Psalms are recited. Tradition says the month of Elul is when Adonai is particularly accessible, like a king who goes out to the field to make Himself available to any subjects who wish to greet him. We reflect on the past year and seek mercy and forgiveness for anything Adonai reveals to us during this time of inner reflection. We also seek reconciliation with those we may have offended and who may have offended us.
